About Deadpan
Funny because it’s true. Serious because it happened.
What this is
Deadpan is a small library of tests about the patterns you only recognise in hindsight — usually while explaining your family, your relationships or your job to somebody else and hearing how it sounds out loud. It started with family, because that is where most of these patterns get learned, and it is not built to stay there.
Every test starts as a game on purpose. You recognise the lines, you laugh, and then you notice which of them you know by heart. That second part is the whole point. A label tells you what someone is. A pattern tells you what keeps happening — and only one of those is useful.
Why the joke comes first
Nobody forwards a diagnosis. People forward the thing that made them laugh and then sit very still for a second. So that is the order we use: the joke is the door, the recognition is the room. A pattern is easier to see than a personality, easier to say out loud, and the only version of this that has ever changed anything.
How long the tests take
Every test is 12–16 situations and takes about 3–4 minutes. That ceiling is deliberate. Past about fifteen questions on a phone, people stop finishing — and a test nobody finishes is a test nobody gets anything out of. If a situation does not change your result, it does not go in.
How the tests are written
- Scenes, not rating scales. Instead of asking how agreeable you are, we describe a moment you have probably lived through and ask what actually happens in it.
- The joke is the door, the recognition is the room. The humour lives in the game and on the shareable result card. The moment you land on your own pattern, the jokes stop.
- Pattern language, deliberately. No result names a disorder. No result claims to identify anyone else — it describes your experience and your reactions, which you are the only expert on.
- Names you can repeat. Results are named after the experience rather than the category, because a name you can say to a friend is worth more than a label you have to look up.
- Free where it matters. The test, the result card and the opening of every breakdown are free and will stay free. The deeper part — what the pattern does over years, the lines that keep it running, and what to do first — is what we sell.
What this deliberately is not
Not a diagnosis. Nothing here assesses, screens for, or rules out any clinical condition, in you or in anyone else.
Not a verdict on another person. If you take a test thinking about someone else, the result tells you about your experience and your reactions. It says nothing verifiable about them, and it should never be shown to them as evidence.
Not a substitute for professional support. If you are in distress, or if a result here lands hard, the right next step is a qualified professional, not another test.
How we handle your data
The tests run entirely in your browser. There are no accounts, no server-side storage of your answers, and no email required to take anything. Your progress is kept in your own browser session so a refresh doesn’t lose your place, and that is all. See the privacy page for the detail.
Why there are no ads
Ads would mean tracking, and tracking would mean your answers leaving this page. Instead, the deeper write-ups are sold once, directly, for a fixed price — no subscription, no upsell, instant download. If you never buy anything, the tests still work completely.
The bigger plan
Deadpan is built as a library rather than a single test: same engine, same voice, a different pattern. New tests get added regularly. If there is a pattern you think is missing, tell us.
